1. Be a good listener, If you attend classes for ED whether in college or otherwise,listen to each and every word of your professor. You get to know about 90% of the essentials from the class itself. For ex. whether to use HB or 2H for a particular line, what all lines or curves to show in your sheet, the order in which you should start making your drawing and most importantly how to analyse the problem in hand.

2. Carry good quality equipment, One of the things which will help you really like the subject is having accurate tools which will give quality to your drawing and improve marks; few of which are a good quality compass,and mechanical pencils.

3. Video tutorial or a Friend. Next, if you are having any difficulties in understanding certain problems, browse for them on YouTube or if not, ask for the help of a proficient friend. Most importantly remember the slightest of the details they explain.

4. Practice. Of course, you need to right? And this doesn’t mean to just scribble on a rough sheet. The main thing you need to do here is to make a rough but nevertheless accurate sketch and compare it with the solution or your friend’s sketch.Ponder your mind on every line that you or they missed(especially the hidden lines of orthographic projections). This will surely open your mind to various little details of the drawing which people usually miss and lose their marks for.

5. Once you are done with the drawing try to find as many mistakes as possible, compare the question carefully with the answer. Obviously make sure you read the question carefully at the beginning itself and draw a mini sketch at the corner of the sheet.

The first CAD book I ever read was 'AutoCAD for Dummies' by Mark Middlebrook. This helped me to get my first job as a CAD Drafter, and I was soon hungry for more.


My next CAD Book was Ellen Finklestein's 'AutoCAD Bible'. I remember reading a chapter of this book every lunchtime, and trying out my new skills in the afternoons. By the end of my first six months in my new job I was teaching my Boss AutoCAD tricks he didn't know!


Ten years on and I now have 23 AutoCAD books in my library (I just counted them). I also have a further 38 books on related subjects such as Technical Drawing, Programming, Architecture and Furniture making.


You don't know what you don't know. There are a lot of great people out there who've done this before - and they want to help you. My top piece of advice for learning AutoCAD, is that you don't need to know everything - you just need to know what's possible. If you now that it CAN be done, you'll work out how to do it when the time comes.


In addition to reading text books, it's great to pick up little snippets of knowledge that you can action immediately. For this, I recommend using your RSS Feed reader to sign up to your favourite CAD Blogs. I track more than 80 CAD blogs this way (Including the AutodeskHelp blog that you are reading right now!). There's just no substitution for packing this kind of knowledge into your noggin. But there are alternatives if you don't like reading.

Autodesk Screencast is a great source of free video tutorials. If you can afford to pay a little, you can get more structured learning through video training providers such as Infinite Skills, Global ETraining or Lynda.com.


If you prefer learning in person, I recommend that you start with your local technical college or Autodesk Value added Reseller.


The Holy Grail of all AutoCAD Training is Autodesk University. There is simply no better place to learn from your peers and colleagues about how THEY are working with AutoCAD right now.


If you can't afford to go to Las Vegas to learn AutoCAD, don't be disheartened. Not only are Autodesk expanding the coverage of AU with many local Autodesk University events, but you can also find a lot of classes from previous years in the AU Library.


I want to tell you - I got so much out of AU I went for three years in a row, entirely self-funded and in my own holiday time. It cost me a lot of money to attend, but it was instrumental in achieving the promotions I received as a result of my expert knowledge.


For the last three years I have attended AU as a speaker, which brings us neatly onto our next point.

Back in 2009 I used to share the great AutoCAD tips that I found on my favourite CAD blogs by emailing them around the office.


I soon learned that this wasn't fool proof, my colleagues would often lose the email and ask me to send it again!


I was inspired by bloggers such as Shaan Hurley to start my own blog, mainly as a database of great CAD tips that I could organise and share more easily with my colleagues.


It soon became obvious that it wasn't only my colleagues reading CadSetterOut, so I started to take Blogging more seriously! Writing a CAD blog as been a great catharsis for me, and a way to reveal gaps in my own knowledge.


You may know how to plot an AutoCAD drawing, or create a Block - but if you've never tried to explain it to someone else, or write down a list of instructions explaining exactly how it should be done, you've never really challenged your own understanding!


Ultimately, writing a CAD blog took me through Guest posting on other's blogs, to writing for AUGIworld and D3D Magazine and ultimately speaking at Autodesk University.


I'm not a trained speaker or teacher. I find leading classes challenging and even uncomfortable, but I love seeing good people do well. If I solve a problem and make a difference for even one person I feel great - I love it!

Plotting AutoCAD drawing can be tricky. Especially for people who just learn AutoCAD. Saw several posts in the forum saying they are confused how to do it. Why the plot result is not correctly scaled. Plotting is actually very easy. Simple. Just click plot or publish then you’re done. But there are some rules and steps you have to do when you draw and arrange your model in layouts, it’s already started when you create your file!

1. Set Your Units!

The first rule is set your drawing unit correctly, and draw with that unit. I’m saw that many AutoCAD users actually don’t care about units. When they insert blocks with incorrect unit, it’s kind of messy. They have to rescale it manually. And this might sound weird, but some of them actually draw it by scaling it, just like drawing it manually on paper. Use appropriate template for your drawing. If you use metric, then use ISO templates. Or you may change the units after you draw. Basically AutoCAD only recognize two units in plotting: inch and mm. So the easiest for you is drawing in those units. Of course you can draw in meters, feet, or other units. But that’s a different story. Let’s talk about the basic first. Draw the object original size, not scaled. Draw all your objects. For annotations, there are two choices:

Draw all your objects in model and annotation in layout
Or you can annotate in your model and use annotation scaling (for AutoCAD 2008 or newer). We will discuss about this on separate post.

2. Set Your Page/Layout

Next thing you should do is setup your page. Use layout, because it is easier to understand and easier to manage. Open your layout. We should already have a viewport. Delete it, we don’t need it at this time. We will create a new one, this one might will be seen too small or too large after we set our page. Now let’s set the page setup. Open your page setup manager. You can open it by right clicking over the tab name, then select page setup manager. Or by right click over quick view layout.

On your page setup manager dialog box, you can see a list of your layouts. Let’s create a new page setup. Click new, give it name such as ‘My A4 layout’, then click OK. This will open page setup dialog box.

Set this values below:

→Your printer/plotter type and sheet size.
On what to plot, select Layout.
Ensure plot scale 1:1.
Plot style table you want to use.


We created this layout with real paper size. So we use scale 1:1. The only scaling we will do is scaling our objects view inside view-ports. Click OK. Now click set current to apply the changes to your active layout. Your layout1 is ready. Open your layout2, then open page setup manager again. Select your previous page setup, then click set current. I believe there is an easier way, but can’t find it. I usually already have it setup in my template, or simply make a copy from existing layout. Do you have any suggestion how to apply the page setup to multiple layout?

3. Setup Your Title Block


Now you should see your real paper size. The dashed rectangle is the area where your printable area. Place your title block here. You can insert existing title block if you already have one, or draw a new one. Remember, this is 1:1 scale. So if you want to have 3mm height text, use 3mm as it heights.

4. Place Viewports and Set the Scale


Now we are ready to place our viewport. You can place it by clicking new in view tab, viewports section, new icon. Or you can use viewport configuration.

In the opened dialog box, select single standard viewport, then click OK. Draw your viewport as you desired. You should see all your drawing inside it. Or in the old way, I prefer to type MV then [enter] :) Next, set the scale. Select your viewport, and select the scale you wanted. You can do it from viewports toolbar or annotation scale bar.

5.  Plot it!


Just activate plot by hitting [ctrl] + P or typing PLOT [enter]. Or of course, from menu or ribbon. Everything should be ready now, but check it first by seeing the preview. If you already familiar with it, you can try to publish multiple drawings at once. Not so difficult now, right? I’m looking forward if you have other plotting tips you would like to share.

How can I switch from 2D Wireframe views to nomal orthogonal view? Is this possible? I received the drawing from the vendor that was drawn in 2D wireframe of some sort, the obj was shown in 3 windows on the screen (See attach pic), i spent sometime to just change back to 2D view but no luck, i tried to click on top letter "2D wireframe" and tried different option but it didn't work the way i want to. The drawing is big size and always said " no responding" when i switch to other view. I just want to get Top, Front and right views. to be honest i don't know much about 3D AutoCAD beside a little knowledge about inventor. Appreciate any suggestion.

Wireframe models are the simplest form of true 3D drawings. They can be used for conversion to other programs or other simple uses. Still, this is not a common way of drawing in 3D these days as the models are easily modified or have (digital) mass.


In this lesson, you will be drawing two objects. First, you will draw the shape from the isometric exercise using the same LINE command that you have always used. Then you will draw a simple chair using the same method. This exercise is good practice to work on the XYZ coordinate system.

If you’re new to the AutoCAD 3D game and you’ve been working in 2D until now, you need to do a couple of things before you can start a new 3D model in AutoCAD: You have to change the workspace, and then you have to open a new file by using a 3D template. 

The following steps explain how:

Open the Workspaces drop-down list on the Quick Access toolbar, or click the Workspace Switching button on the status bar and then choose 3D Modeling.

Toolbars, palettes, and Ribbon panels flash on and off, and soon AutoCAD settles down to display the Ribbon, as configured for the 3D Modeling workspace with a few additional panels.

Click the Application button and choose New; then click Drawing.

Then Select Template dialog box appears.

Choose acad3d.dwt if you’re working in imperial units or acadiso3d.dwt if you’re working in metric. Click Open.

Exporting And Printing

You can generate a PDF file from a layout by plotting it to an AutoCAD PDF plotter.

Near the bottom-left of the drawing area, click the layout tab.

Click Output tabPlot panelPlot.  

FindIn the Plot dialog box, under Printer/Plotter, in the Name box, select the most appropriate AutoCAD PDF plotter configuration (PC3 file) for your requirement.


Note: The system ships with several AutoCAD PDF PC3 files that are preset to generate PDF files customized for the purpose identified by the PC3 file name. For example, the AutoCAD PDF (Web and Mobile) PC3 file produces PDF files optimized for viewing on mobile devices and Web browsers.Select paper size, plot area, plot scale, orientation, and other options.

Click OK.

In the Browse for Plot File dialog box, select a location and enter a file name for the PDF file.
